Castle FM aims to brighten up NE Derbyshire

North East Derbyshire has gained a reputation over the years as a rather grim and depressed ex-mining region. Castle FM are aiming to help change this perception, and to bring a ray of sunshine to the area, with their bid to win approval to launch a local radio station for Bolsover, NE Derbyshire and Chesterfield.

This is intended to be very much a “people’s station”, building strong links to the local community and with a particular emphasis on inspiring young people to take an interest in radio production themselves.

The team behind Castle FM are placing community relations at the very heart of their application: local people are being encouraged to play their part in helping it become a reality, by becoming involved in everything from research to presentation.

The intention is for the station to offer much more than simply a “voice on the radio”, instead becoming a real inspiration to young people in the area – something underlined by the Castle FM bid’s commitment to offer summer camps and after-school activities in radio-related skills.

Bid co-ordinator Paul Wragsdale, who has a radio background with Peak as well as a successful career as a DJ, is part of a four-person team hoping to turn what was once just a dream into an exciting reality.

Another local DJ, Darren Cairns, will use his experience as a promoter in the vital role of events and promotions manager, while Paul Wilkinson’s extensive technical skills will be key to keeping things running smoothly.

Finally, Michelle Stevenson-Briggs has been given the important task of taking Castle FM out into the community and into NE Derbyshire’s schools and colleges.
